Adidas removes Bella Hadid from its campaign

Bella Hadid, known for her vocal support of Palestine, was removed from an Adidas ad campaign for retro sneakers associated with the 1972 Munich Olympics. This decision came in light of the tragic attack during those games, where Palestinian gunmen killed eleven Israeli athletes. As part of a series reviving classic sneakers, Adidas has relaunched the SL72, a shoe athletes worn at the 1972 Olympics.

In the 1972 Munich Games, a German police officer and eleven Israeli athletes were killed after members of the Palestinian Black September group infiltrated the Olympic village and took hostages. Adidas announced that it would immediately revise the rest of the campaign. On Friday, the company issued a statement to AFP acknowledging the unintended connection to tragic historical events and apologizing for any distress caused. A spokeswoman confirmed that Hadid was dropped from the campaign, emphasizing that the shoe's original release was in 1972 without mentioning the terror attack on the Israeli athletes.

Hadid, born in the US to a Palestinian father, has been a vocal advocate for Palestinian rights, especially following the Hamas attack on Israel on October 7, which escalated into the Gaza war.
