Mark Zuckerberg, CEO of Meta, recently completed three days of testimony in a high-profile antitrust trial initiated by the Federal Trade Commission (FTC). The FTC alleges that Meta's acquisitions of Instagram and WhatsApp led to the creation of a social media monopoly, stifling competition and potentially harming consumers.
Zuckerberg defended the acquisitions, asserting that they were driven by the value and growth potential of both platforms, rather than an attempt to eliminate competition. He highlighted TikTok and YouTube as major global competitors in the market. Responding to internal communications cited by the FTC, Zuckerberg explained that his inquiries about rival companies were aimed at innovation and learning. He also denied any intention to suppress Instagram's growth or view WhatsApp as a competitive threat, citing differing visions with WhatsApp’s original owners.
The trial, expected to last several weeks, will feature testimonies from former Meta executives and representatives of competing companies, with potential long-term consequences for future antitrust investigations into big tech acquisitions.
