India’s fresher job market is showing signs of improvement, but opportunities remain uneven across industries and cities. As International Youth Day is observed, hiring trends highlight growing demand for young talent and changing employer expectations.
According to TeamLease EdTech’s Career Outlook Report for July-December 2026, 75% of surveyed employers plan to recruit freshers during the second half of the year, compared with 73% in the previous six-month period. The report draws on responses from 1,097 employers surveyed between May and July 2026.
E-commerce and technology start-ups, along with retail, show the strongest fresher hiring intent at 93% each. Manufacturing follows at 89%, while FMCG stands at 86% and travel and hospitality at 81%. The figures show that entry-level opportunities are expanding beyond conventional corporate roles.
However, the trend is not uniform across sectors. IT reports a relatively strong hiring intent of 76%, but this is five percentage points lower than the 81% recorded earlier in 2026. Consulting, education, media and entertainment, marketing and advertising, and telecom have also registered declines.
Available roles also reflect the changing employment landscape. Employers are seeking AI application developers, semiconductor design engineers, data-centre operations associates, advertising specialists and inventory executives. Opportunities are also emerging in cybersecurity, full-stack development, quick-commerce operations, digital marketing, healthcare technology, supply chains and GIS.
Geographically, Bengaluru leads with an 89% fresher hiring intent, followed by Mumbai at 75% and Chennai at 71%. Hyderabad, Delhi and Pune record 60%, 49% and 41%, respectively.
Employers are increasingly prioritising capabilities over qualifications alone. Skills such as cloud security, business analytics, machine learning, semiconductor design and big-data engineering are gaining importance, alongside adaptability, critical thinking, accountability, communication and attention to detail.
For India’s youth, opportunities are growing, but employability increasingly depends on practical skills, digital fluency and effective application of knowledge.
