The Government of India has established the AI Governance and Economic Group (AIGEG), a high-level inter-ministerial body aimed at centralising the country’s artificial intelligence strategy. Chaired by Ashwini Vaishnaw, with Jitin Prasada as Vice Chairperson, the group brings together key scientific and economic leaders, including representatives from NITI Aayog.
The AIGEG will go beyond regulation to shape India’s AI roadmap, focusing on cross-sector oversight, compliance, and economic impact. A key priority is a “jobs audit” to assess automation risks and plan workforce transitions. It will also classify AI use cases based on readiness and feasibility.
Supported by an expert committee, the group aims to balance innovation with safeguards, strengthening India’s global competitiveness in AI.
