Visa has released its Visa Consulting and Analytics (VCA) Whitepaper titled India’s Affluent Economy 2025–2026, offering insights into how affluence in India is increasingly defined by behaviour rather than income alone. Based on a YouGov study and Visa-Net data across travel, retail, dining and lifestyle categories, the report highlights a shift toward more intentional and identity-driven consumption.
The study notes a sharp rise in India’s affluent population, with individuals earning over ₹10 lakh increasing from 69 lakh to 130 lakh. It also shows that affluence is expanding beyond metros into cities like Ahmedabad, Surat, Jaipur and Lucknow, where spending patterns are increasingly similar to major urban centres.
Key findings reveal that credit cards are central to premium consumption, with affluent consumers prioritising access over ownership—such as memberships, curated experiences, and limited-edition offerings. Travel leads discretionary spending, followed by luxury retail, while wellness, dining, and technology are also growing lifestyle categories.
